Renowned for her spirit of hard work and gorgeous nature, Uganda Christian University’s Mary Nangobi seems to have recently added to her tally a new and bigger achievement. Nangobi, whom we can confirm will be embarking on her third year of Law School at the Mukono Campus come September, 2019 has taken her passion for Human Rights to a whole new level by launching the Rural Justice Initiative (R.J.I), a Non – Governmental Organisation that aims at promoting Justice in rural areas alongside 2 other Directors of the said Organisation.
More amongst their programmes or objectives are to conduct Public Interest litigation on behalf of vulnerable persons in rural areas, create Human Rights Awareness, improving access to Justice, Combatting rampant land grabbing, poverty alleviation and empowerment, research and advocacy and finally children protection.
In an interview with Campus Bee, she emphasised the fact that it is absurd that local people, especially natives from Luuka District in Busoga region where she comes from, are so ignorant about their rights and even the few who do, never know how to effect these rights.
She further expressed her concern with the poor status of the Education sector in her region as most children do not go to school because they can’t afford to pay the fees and hence do not realise their right to Education. This wasn’t all, as a feminist, she found it pertinent to also discuss the vice of Gender-based violence in homes and how her organisation would help to curb the same.
When asked about what challenges they as an organisation have faced, she mentioned the aspect of lack of funds as most of the projects seem to be funded mostly by the management of the organisation. Their Head offices are at Justice House, Lwanda in Luuka District.
