The moot team of Uganda Christian University (UCU) faculty of law, has been declared the winner of the just concluded Jessup National Rounds that took place at Makerere Law School (Muk) auditorium on the 16th February 2018.
The winning team, UCU who represented the respondents garnered 526 points just a slight margin of 4 points ahead of the MUK law moot team that had 522 points earned in the final rounds.
Isabella Namuyomba from UCU emerged the best oralist with 266 points. UCU was also represented by 4 other students Yasmin Ahmed, Isaac Mpirwe, Ian Mwine, and Smarts Mukisa who dedicate their victory to Arnold Agaba, the moots coordinator at the faculty of law and other staff members who helped them prepare for the competition.
Only 3 universities UCU, Muk, and Cavendish University took part in the competitions this year after the teams from the other universities like Law Development Center, Kampala International University and Nkumba University submitted their applications past the deadline and were rejected from the competition.
Delay in computing results
In the last year’s national rounds, controversies arose after the results were highly contested. After a couple of correspondences between the national rounds cordinators and the head managment of the international moot competition at White & Case in the US, a global law firm, 2 teams were taken, with the LDC team being an exhibition team not taking part in active participation.
Computation of the results this time round took an unusually longer time, about 20 minutes with the judges computing and cross checking that their math this time, was in order.
Speaking at today’s moot competition, the national Jessup coordinator for Uganda, Maurice Muhumuza said explaining the delay that, he did not want to have the same issues like those that arose in last year’s competition and therefore had to confirm the results with the 7 judges to try to remove any possibility of error.
What next?
The UCU team will represent Uganda in Washington D.C for the second year in a row at the international rounds where universities from all over the world will compete on the world stage. The rounds will be taking place in the month of April this year.
Jessup Moot is the biggest moot court competition in the world and happens in the US every year.
