Probably the most popular site at Uganda Christian University (UCU), main campus is Nkoyoyo Hall. This is what UCU students may term as the main hall. A multi-purpose hall that serves as a class room, church for Sunday service, the weekly community worship, and also that place where students would hold some of their events organized on campus.
The hall derives its name from the retired Archbishop Dr. Livingstone Nkoyoyo, the first chancellor of the UCU from 1997 when the university was given a charter as private university, until 2004 when he was replaced by Archbishop Henry Luke Orombi.
The Archbishop had been critically ill, battling cancer of the throat and was since 2016 admitted to a hospital in London until June last year when he returned to the country. He passed on today at around 11 am from Kampala Hospital where he had been admitted.
“Our first Chancellor and former Archbishop of the @ChurchofUganda Bishop Livingstone Mpalanyi has gone to be with the Lord. Rest in Peace” reads a tweet from the university official twitter handle.
Some students at the university, and the Alumni have taken to their social media accounts to express what they feel. Using WhatsApp, they have updated their pictures statuses, and several posts on their Facebooks and Twitter to mourn his decease.
Students have expressed that he left a legacy that will leave on even after his decease.
“You are a role model,” one comment read.
He will be the first Archbishop of Uganda to be buried at Uganda Martyrs Anglican Shrine in Namugongo on Tuesday next week.
He died at 82 years of age.
May his soul rest in peace.
