In a ceremony graced by the Prime Minister of the Republic of Uganda Dr. Ruhakana Rugunda as the guest of honor, Uganda Christian University (UCU) has on Friday September 14th officially launched the UCU School of Medicine (UCUSoM) at the Archbishop’s Gardens, Namirembe.
A total of 62 students make up the pioneer UCUSoM, 35 of whom are females and 27 being male students. The majority of these students (53) are pursuing Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery while nine are doing Bachelor of Dental surgery. 56 of these students were admitted on direct entry category while six had diplomas in Nursing or allied Health professions at distinction levels.
“I warmly welcome our pioneer students in the UCU School of Medicine . A University is made by students, if we had no students, no accreditation would amount to anything. Our first cohort of students includes international students, which immediately signifies the geographical constituency that the School of Medicine is poised to serve. I am pleased to announce that the pioneer students have come from six countries, namely, Eritrea (1), Tanzania (1), Kenya (1), South Sudan (2), Nigeria (2), and Uganda (55). “ Rev. Canon John Senyonyi, UCU Vice Chancellor stated at the Medical School’s launch.
The UCU School of Medicine has been in plans of establishment since 2013, until this year following accreditation by the National Council of Higher Education(NCHE).
Also at the function was the university’s Chancellor Rev. Stanley Ntagali who thanked the architects of this achievement including Mengo Hospital which has been training Medical experts for the last 112 years, and is set to be the School’s training Hospital.
“I thank the Director, Mengo Hospital and your staff. My thanks also go to various medical personnel who over the years, came together to plan and support the founding of a medical school at UCU.” Ntagali said while speaking at the launch.
While speaking as the guest of honor, Hon. Dr. Ruhakana Rugunda noted that he has no doubts about UCU’s level of training and he has faith that the medical experts produced at UCU will be of great value to the country. “There is no doubt in my mind that Uganda Christian University, Mukono which has always focused on quality will ensure that the Doctors produced through this partnership , through being trained at Mengo will actually be Doctors that will have high professionalism, integrity and will put the patients first. Hon Rugunda said.
