“Dear Sylvia Arinaitwe, the disciplinary committee of the college that sat on the fourteenth did establish that you were found pregnant while at campus, yet you are not married. The administration therefore upholds the decision to suspend you for one year and this takes immediate effect.”
21-year-old Arinaitwe was one of the 26 girls that were served the above notice by Uganda Christian University early this year for conceiving when not married. That is not the worst part for Arinaitwe, this student became more devastated when she gave birth and lost her baby instantly. “My sweet little girl was not able to breath for a while on earth when I pushed her. It is hard to take in but I am managing. I’m now just seated at home waiting to see if I will be allowed to resume school in January 2015 as the university indicated in their suspension letter,”Arinaitwe painfully adds.
It was her final year at university and had already sat for one paper by the time she was sadly stopped me.
Sylvia is among the many students who are suspended from Uganda Christian University every year for conceiving while at campus.
