A wise person once said, “The young people think the old people are fools but the old people know the young people are fools.”
After several attempts to stop students from involving themselves in gambling especially sports betting, a Uganda Christian University student buried his head in the sand and didn’t take heed of the warnings by both parents, stakeholders and lecturers about the dangers of betting.
Bernard will live to remember 16th March 2019 for the rest of his life, a day which started as a normal one in the mukono based University suddenly turned out to be a night mare to one of their own students .While others were busy moving from hostel to hostel looking for outfits for the Campus Bee silent disco at Nana hotel, Bernard was planning to go shopping in Down town Kampala.
At around 5pm, Bernard boarded a taxi to Kampala all excited and ready to spend his 200,000 shillings accordingly. Unfortunately due to traffic jam he reached late in the city centre which prompted him to find a place to relax because it was already 8pm. Out of the blue, Bernard decided to attend the Nana Silent Disco which was organized by Campus Bee.While in the house enjoying the sweet melodies coming from different channels played by the Djs, the devil whispered to Bernard and reminded him about betting. He very fast decided to stake 170,000/= in favor of Manchester United which was meant to play 10:45pm and he was expected to win over 300000.
By midnight, the game had ended and Bernard had also used all his remaining money on booze and the sweet mchomo which was being sold at Nana Hostel. He lost all his money as money lost to Wolves 2-1.
At this point, he came back to his senses and started to think of how he would reach mukono because he had no money with him and was only left with 200 shillings and to make it worse he had to place of abode in Kampala- so without over thinking, he moved out of Nana hostel unbuttoned and tied the shirt around his head like John Rambo.
Bernard started his long distance running trials as he went back to Mukono. We are told he only stopped at Kireka around 1am to get refreshed with water for one hundred shillings and continued with his trek. Fortunately, he reached his hostel around 2am panting heavily like a dog and swore never to bet again in his life.
