Mukuru Herbert a third year student of mass communication at Uganda Christian University has started a charity drive named Upendo Mikono which basically means Charitable hands. This charity drive is meant to help the disadvantaged children, schools that lack materials and those in need of rehabilitation that they are not alone.

At the moment, Herbert and his group of five which include Lukiza David, Alinda Trevor, Ingabire Rena, Mahawa Shadia and a lecturer from UCU named Pacutho Faith have so far fundraised a number of items with the help of fellow students who have donated items such as clothes, money, toilet paper, soap among others. These proceedings will be directed towards Bishop West Primary school. This school is both for the special needs children and those with normal learning abilities.

However Herbert states that there is need for more donations so as to reach a wider range of schools and other people in need of help.
“We have collected much however, we still more support and donations in any form from members of the society and I urge people to support the Upendo Mikono so that we can expand blessings to others,” he said.

The money that is being collected at the moment is going to be used to purchase material items such as mattresses, fire extinguishers, mosquito nets, wheelchairs among other things that the school is lacking.
How it all started
The Upendo Mikono campaign all started after Herbert randomly visited Bishop West Primary school and interacted with their head of affairs, Mr Olupot Nicholas who informed him that the school was in dire need of help with various necessities such as dormitories, sports equipment and water harvesters.

Mukuru also noticed that their was a section in the school for the special needs students who needed attention. These students suffer from Down Syndrome, have a problem with hearing, speaking, talking etc. It is then that he asked God for the strength and courage to gather as much as he could to help the school and its students.
