While still getting to terms with the reality that condoms are scarce, students at Uganda Christian University (UCU) have been hit with another reality, the Coronavirus. The fact that it has not yet reached Uganda has not stopped students from taking preventive measures.
As I took a walk along the stretch from Kauga to Bugujju, the new greeting formats that some students showcased caught my attention. The first group I saw used their feet to usher in their conversation.
Another lot was just nodding their heads, when one of the students offered their hand for greeting, he was given those ‘quarantine’ eyes by his friends.
But the most notable one is the use of elbows where it is stretched out to avoid contact with the palms of the hand.
“With all this Bugujju dust, Corona can’t scare us. This dust is worse, it is called the Mukono virus but we still have to take precaution,” one of the students remarked.
The University has unlike other universities taken up hand sanitizers to prevent infections. These sanitizers kill up to 99.9 per cent of the germs on hands. This initiated has been pioneered by Allan Galpin, the University Hospital. With these preventive measures at hand, the University expects Coronavirus to keep a distance from its premises.
