Uganda Christian University is in the process of starting a medical school to train health workers, Chancellor Stanley Ntagali revealed on Friday last week.
Ntagali explained that the medical school is to be established with the help of the church-founded Mengo hospital.
“I commend the task force of both university staff and other health professionals who continue to work hard to ensure that this medical school opens its gates in September 2016,” said Ntagali, during the third part of the 16th graduation.
Of the 1,640 graduands, 869 were female while 771 male. He added that the school will increase the capacity of seasoned medical professionals who will help bridge the gaps in the health sector.
President Museveni, who attended the ceremony, partially fulfilled his 10-year pledge of improving ICT at the university. Museveni came along with 100 dell computers out the 300 he pledged in 2004.
In a three-minute speech, the president congratulated the graduands and paid special recognition to the first lady, Janet Kataaha Museveni, also minister for Karamoja affairs, for completing her masters’ degree.
Meanwhile, Ntagali also revealed that UCU has elevated its Mbale campus into a constituent college after it was approved by the national council for higher education, making it the second after Bishop Barham College in Kabale.
The vice-chancellor, Rev Dr John Senyonyi, said UCU was moving towards utilizing technological advances by embarking on e-learning programmes.
