During the official launch of the Uganda Christian University Faculty of Journalism, Media and Communication last Friday, the university’s Vice Chancellor revealed that leaders of public and private universities want to meet with President Museveni.
Rev Can. John Senyonyi said that the planned meeting is aimed at discussing the challenges faced by the higher institutions of learning and looking for a way forward to improve the quality of education in various universities.
“I have today (Friday November, 23) sent a letter to the President asking him to schedule for us a meeting. This has been on our hearts for long, other countries like South Africa have done it therefore the President should at least get one day for us,” Senyonyi said.
Senyonyi added that without such a meeting, the government will never know what the universities are doing as he talked about challenges they face among which include the ‘unfair taxes’ affecting the growth of higher education.
“This tax and others need to be completely waived or reduced significantly since government is concerned about development. Right now if I am to put up any building at the university, it is very expensive,” Senyonyi added.
The meeting is expected to feature around 52 Vice Chancellors, which happens to be the total number of accredited universities by the National Council for Higher Education (NCHE).
