Sunday 20th September 2020 will be a day to remember for all the coming generations of the Makerere University fraternity as it was the day when the Ivory Tower, which is the main symbol of Uganda’s oldest university, burnt down into ashes.
In a move to restore the Ivory Tower to its former state, the Uganda Society of Architects have pledged to offer technical expertise in a statement released by the society dated September 23rd.
Ms Jacinta Kabarungi, the President of the Architects’ Society said in the statement that as the Uganda Society of Architects they believe in the preservation and maintenance of their heritage and as such are ready and willing to participate in restoration efforts of the IvoryTower.
“It is very evident from what is currently on ground that theuniversity walls cannot stand. Due to the age of the building, you could see the cracks in the walls and such extreme heat affects thestability of the building,” Ms Kabarungi said.
In addition to this, Ms Kabarungi said that the old structure can bot be maintained but the new structure would be a revamp of the original design of the structure, to maintain the look and legacy of the building.
The offer was accepted by the Vice Chancellor, Prof Barnabas Nawangwe who went ahead to welcome all stakeholders that wish to contribute in the process of rebuilding the tower.
