Word reaching us here at campus bee has it that Uganda Christian University students have developed their own social network to rival Zuckerberg’s Facebook.
Created by former UCU I.C.T minister Magala Peter and Buule John, a 3rd year BPLM student, www.ucuconnection.com is touted by its developers as “the first of it’s kind on the continent”. The system that was outsourced to India took three months to be completed.
“We came up with this innovation to Help students stay in touch with one another, acces notes and past papers online, access hostel information and as well aiding communication between the guild and the students community.” says Buule.
The network allows students to share files and internship information it also has an online bazaar where students can trade with each other. Another cool feature this network has is the one that informs students of upcoming university events so as to keep the students and all stakeholders up to date with information. All that, in addition to the basic facebook functionalities.
Students will access the site using access numbers and desired passwords. Asked about the account security of subscribers in light of major data hacking worldwide, Buule insists that ucuconnection is a secure social media system operated and controlled by students under the guild I.C.T ministry to ensure its integrity.
Accessible to only students and staff of the Uganda Christian University community, ucuconnection’s developers are faced with a herculean task of gaining the loyalty of a population that is addicted to the facebook, twitter and whatsapp social media platforms.
As if to underscore its handy-ness UCU’s guild president Arthur Baliruno says that “the website will enable better communication and collaboration among the populace at UCU. It will also help the guild distribute announcements, allow students to exchange resources and best academic practices. There is power when everyone is connected” Mr.Baliruno Arthur, guild president.
“The university needs such innovations, the ones that help students as a whole and the entire university community”. Mr Bwambale George William, the students guild speaker chips in.
Although Buule insists that the website is the first of its kind in Africa, it is an undeniable fact that many of its functionalities are a duplication of the already established social networks including Facebook and Whatsapp. It’s is noteworthy that Africa is home to a huge percentage of the said social networks’ subscription base.
