The School of Law at Makerere University was the meeting point as the presidents of students’ law societies from various Universities in Uganda converged to discuss the formation of a society that will unite law students all over the country.
The attendees included Mugumya Edwin, President of Makerere Law School and chairman of the meeting, Kiiza Keneth vice president Busoga Univerity Law School, Nsubuga James Anderson president Kampala International University, Kiira Brian Alex President of the Uganda Christian University, Mulamba Julius President IUIU main campus among a couple if other university law society heads.
The major challenges that the participants have noted so far at their university was the lack of funding to see that their work runs smoothly, but nevertheless, Mr. Kiira informed his learned colleagues of the steps UCU has taken to solve this problem such as purchasing law statutes at a low cost and then reselling them to students at a higher cost to raise funds for the society.
Challenges aside, the university law society heads agreed on forming an interim executive, with Mr. Mugumya holding that it would be an own goal for them to claim that they have formed a permanent executive yet they have not yet acquainted themselves with the law governing such organisations.
At the end of it all, Makerere’s Mugumya Edwin emerged emerged unopposed as the interim president of the Uganda Law Students’ Society; Kiira Brian scooped the position of Publicity Secretary and Nsubuga James Anderson was elected as the General Secretary.
However, it was suggested by Mr. Nsubuga that the presidents of the various law socities would later serve on the board and instead leave the ordinary law students to vie for the elective offices, something that all the other members agreed to.
The law society heads agreed to meet again in a month’s time to deliberate on the way forward and discuss the workplan for the newly formed society after canvassing the relevant law governing the society.
