The Ministry of Education and Sports has postponed the reopening of all schools and education institutions across the country, citing safety concerns linked to the forthcoming general elections.
In an official announcement issued on January 16, 2026, the Ministry said all schools, including international schools, tertiary institutions and universities, will now reopen on Tuesday, February 10, 2026, instead of the earlier communicated date of February 2.
The decision follows a prior notice released on January 6, 2026, but was revised to ensure the safety of learners during the election period.
“The Ministry hereby informs you that due to the General Elections and to ensure the safety of all learners, all schools and education institutions across the country are directed to reopen on Tuesday 10th February 2026,” the statement reads.
According to the Ministry, Term One of the 2026 academic year will officially run from February 10 to May 1, 2026. All school administrators have been directed to strictly adhere to these dates and to align their operations with the approved national school calendar published on the Ministry’s website.
The directive applies to vice chancellors, principals, headteachers, parents, guardians, students and school administrators, all of whom have been formally notified of the adjustment.
The announcement was signed by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education and Sports, Dr. Kedrace R. Turyagenda, who emphasized the importance of compliance to ensure an orderly and safe start of the academic term.
Uganda is heading into a highly anticipated general election season, with authorities repeatedly stressing the need to prioritise public safety and stability. The postponement of school reopening is part of broader measures aimed at minimizing disruption and safeguarding learners nationwide.
Parents and students have been advised to take note of the revised dates and plan accordingly.
