Weightlifter Julius Ssekitoleko, who went missing in Japan has returned home. The 20 year old Kampala University student was expelled from Japan, days after he was found in Yokkaichi – Mie Prefecture. Mr. Ssekitoleko had vanished from Team Uganda Olympic camp in Izumisano ahead of the Tokyo2020 Games leaving a note behind claiming to search for a better life.
Ssekitoleko had a walk of shame as he was returned today at 8:30am aboard Qatar Airways, in company of a Japanese official to ensure his arrival to Uganda. The athlete had failed to qualify for the Games after his arrival in Japan, and was due to fly back to Uganda on July 20.
In the note, Ssekitoleko said he did not want to return to Uganda and asked the members of his delegation to send his belongings back to his wife. City officials first feared he was missing when they noticed that a Covid-19 test sample had not been submitted by Ssekitoleko.
