Uganda’s academic and media worlds are in mourning following the sudden death of respected scholar and communications expert Dr. Brian Ssemujju (PhD), who passed away on Sunday, August 3.
A former senior lecturer and proud alumnus of Uganda Christian University (UCU), Dr. Ssemujju was a leading voice in mass communication theory, known for his sharp intellect, critical insights, and unwavering commitment to education.
Described by colleagues as “a pillar in Uganda’s academic community,” Dr. Ssemujju spent decades shaping young minds and pushing for higher standards in journalism and communication ethics. His death comes as a heavy blow to both the media fraternity and the nation’s higher education institutions.
“We’ve lost more than a scholar. We’ve lost a guide, a mentor, and a thought leader,” one former student posted on social media. “His lectures didn’t just inform — they transformed.”
At Uganda Christian University, where he served for years, tributes poured in throughout Monday, with students and faculty describing him as a “brilliant mind who gave generously of his time and knowledge.”
Details surrounding the cause of death have not yet been made public.
In a statement, the university said:
“Dr. Brian Ssemujju was not only our colleague but our friend, our teacher, and a beacon of intellectual strength. May his family find comfort and peace during this difficult time.”
He leaves behind a family, a legacy of published research, and a generation of students who credit him for inspiring their careers.
