Darius Aruho Katono is a Ugandan who went to study abroad on a scholarship after portraying enormous potential and exceptional ability at his then school, Ntare in Mbarara district.
Born in Sheema district, Katono had topped his class at Ntare for about 5 years non-stop.
Fast forward to 2017 and he has graduated with a Bachelors degree in Chemical Engineering ‘with Distinction’.
He was the most outstanding student of the Gallogly College of Engineering and carried the college banner during graduation.
This degree will allow him to use principles of Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry and Physics to design processes in production of pharmaceuticals, drugs, oil refining, petrochemicals, microelectronics, and polymers among other advanced products.
On how his experience has been throughout this time and how he hopes to give back to his country on homecoming, Darius is joyful optimistic.
“It’s been a great and challenging journey and one of my future goals is to get as many Ugandan students to come and experience the thrill of studying in the United States. I will come back as soon as I finish my advanced degrees(phD) to contribute to the motherland.”
Katono very much wanted his mother to be around for his graduation and he put up an online fundraiser to get money to cover his mother’s air ticket and was able to reach it in record time from mostly amongst his friends and school mates.
“My mother, just like all parents would not miss a visiting day at Kashozi (Primary School) or catching a taxi and visiting in Ntare (School, Mbarara) whenever. So yes, I did not want her to miss this special occasion and we did all we could to bring her.”
