Darius Aruho Katono, a student of Chemical Engineering at The University of Oklahoma and an old student of Ntare School has, through an online fundraiser, raised close to shs10m for his mother to travel to Oklahoma, USA for his graduation.
Through GoFundMe.com, a do-it-yourself fundraising website to raise money online, Katono received close to $2,700 just 24 hours after posting his personal cause. Katono needed $2,400 for his mother’s travel expenses.
“Hello friends, This is my beautiful, loving and gracious mother in Uganda. She let me travel to Germany when I was 9, and also to US as 16-year old. My most vivid memory is her reading African children’s books to me every night while she learnt to read herself.
She is the most kind, and I would do anything for her. However, this time, I might need some help getting her to Norman, OK so we can share this milestone of graduation in May at the University of Oklahoma.
I am highly grateful for a friend of mine that has covered almost half of the expenses but since she will be a first-time traveler, my brother will join her too for guidance. I will be very delighted for any of your support, and it will be even more special since it will be mother’s day that weekend.”
Forty friends and well-wishers placed donations ranging from $20 (70,000) to $100 (350,000)…and some generous souls offering $500 (1,750,000). It’s good to know there are still good people out there!
