Prof Barnabas Nawangwe, the Makerere University Vice-Chancellor has revealed that he has received information that some Ugandan universities are offering fake degrees to Nigerian students within a year of their study, here in the Pearl of Africa.
Nawangwe explained that he received the complaint from Ibrahim Yakasi, the Director of the National Universities Commission of Nigeria which is their equivalent for Uganda’s National Council For Higher Education (NCHE). The Makerere VC received this information during his trip to Puebla, Mexico where he had gone to attend the International Association of Universities Conference 2019.
“Mr. Ibrahim has revealed that there are Ugandan ‘universities’ which are offering Nigerians fake degrees within a year of study. We have agreed to work together to protect the integrity of degrees from Ugandan universities. He has also encouraged me to establish a Makerere liaison office in Nigeria.” Nawangwe wrote.
During the conference, Nawangwe reportedly held discussions with Prof. Zewdu, DVC of Bahir Dar University regarding opportunities for collaboration between the two universities. Nawangwe also vowed to pursue faculty and student exchange, joint research, joint supervision and others.
His statement has come following the recent graduation ceremonies of several universities this year, the latest being Kampala international University (KIU). Nawangwe has been in and out of the country as Makerere students prepare to kick off their end of semester exams slated to begin today, Monday 18th November.
