The East Africa Debate Championship 2017, has been painted black, yellow and red after all the Ugandan universities that are taking part in the tournament qualified for quarter finals.
The championship, that kicked off on 27th August, 2017 attracted teams from across East Africa within Rwanda, Burundi, Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda, and is being hosted at the University of Rwanda.
In the qualification stages for quarter finals, all the Ugandan teams in the championship have qualified. They are from Makerere University, Uganda Christian University (UCU), Kyambogo University, IUEA and Nkumba University.
It was, however, sour grapes for universities like Kim University, Kepler University, and University of Kigali that had to drop out and kiss the trophy goodbye.
In a telephone interview with the Makerere Debate Union chairperson, Patrick Murungi, the third year law student expressed utmost gratitude towards the university administration that believed in them especially the Chairman Appointments Committee Mr. Bruce Kabaasa who is also the Debate Patron and the Guild Speaker Jothan Y. Burobuto.
“We took three teams and all of them have qualified for quarter finals. The tournament is heated up but we are up to the task and we came here to win,” Murungi told Campus Bee.
The Ugandan teams will begin with quarter finals on Thursday 31st, August 2017. The semi finals and final itself shall all be on the same day (Thursday).
