Representatives from Ugandan universities have scooped several awards from East African debate competition that was held in Kigali recently.
The competition which was organised by East Africa Community Secretariat brought together universities from East Africa to debate about matters regarding regional integration. It started on October 29 and ended on November 1.
Universities from Uganda, Tanzania, Kenya and Rwanda were represented and each country presented 6 participants for the debate.
Uganda was represented by Naluyima Samantha Agwang and Joel Roy Muchunguzi from Makerere University (MAK), Umar Muhumuza and Nansubuga Irene from Mbarara University of Science and Technology (Must), Patrick Semwogerere from Uganda Christian University (UCU) and Lucy Muduro Mega from International University of East Africa (IUEA).
During a dinner at the Independent University of Kigali, different awards were given to the winners of the debate. Ssemwogere emerged the best debater male, Irene the best debater female, Muhumuza was voted the ambassador of the EAC to Uganda while Agwang deputized him.
Six teams debated with 3 on the affirmative and 3 for the alternative strategy side as they presented arguments regarding the motion: “This house believes that effective youth participation in electoral process is a prerequisite for attaining sustainable electoral democracy in the East African Community.”
Ambassadors to the EAC were also chosen from the other countries that participated in the debate.
