Uganda’s agricultural sector has experienced notable growth under the implementation of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) government’s 2021-2026 manifesto commitments. A recent government report, presented during the PPP Forum on November 27, 2024, highlights significant achievements in agricultural commercialization, export growth, and productivity enhancements. The sector recorded a growth rate of 5.1% during the financial year 2023/24, contributing 24.6% to the national GDP. In monetary terms, Uganda’s agricultural GDP rose from UGX 35.360 trillion in the financial year 2020/21 to UGX 49.722 trillion by 2023/24. Agricultural exports also increased dramatically, growing by 42% from USD 1.678 billion to USD 2.535 billion over the same period. The government attributes this progress to targeted interventions designed to modernize and industrialize the agricultural sector, improve post-harvest processes, and expand irrigation and mechanization.
Key Achievements Driving Growth
- Agricultural Commercialization and Industrialization: Investments in value chain development, research, and extension services have enhanced both production and export quality. Crops like coffee, dairy, fish, and maize have seen significant increases in volume and quality, contributing to the expanded export market.
- Post-Harvest Handling and Storage: Efforts to reduce post-harvest losses have included improved storage infrastructure and better handling practices, enabling farmers to retain more of their yields.
- Value Addition and Agro-Processing: The establishment of agro-processing facilities has been critical in transforming raw agricultural products into higher-value goods, boosting Uganda’s competitiveness in international markets.
- Mechanization: Increased access to mechanized farming tools has reduced reliance on traditional methods, improving productivity and efficiency for farmers across the country.
- Water for Production and Irrigation: The expansion of irrigation systems has helped mitigate the impacts of climate change, ensuring consistent agricultural activity throughout the year.
A Path Forward
The NRM government has reaffirmed its commitment to sustaining this upward trajectory in the agricultural sector. These efforts aim to increase farmers’ incomes, improve livelihoods, and position Uganda as a leading agricultural exporter in the region and beyond.By focusing on modernization, value addition, and climate resilience, Uganda’s agriculture sector is poised to remain a cornerstone of the country’s economy while contributing to long-term national development goals.
