19-year-old Savior Guma, a student at the Uganda Institute of Information and Communication Technology, has found himself behind bars. The young tech enthusiast was arrested after a video surfaced showing him boastfully claiming he used his IT skills to hack into stolen phones, altering their serial numbers to avoid tracking. Guma even admitted to charging a fee for this illicit service.
Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Patrick Onyango addressed the media, explaining that Guma and his alleged accomplice confessed to creating the video purely to garner views and likes on social media platforms, particularly TikTok.
“These individuals are currently in custody at Kampala Central Police Station and will face charges of computer misuse and public nuisance,” Onyango stated.
Onyango emphasized the seriousness of the situation, stating, “This action will serve as a lesson to other potential offenders.” The police are keen on curbing such irresponsible behavior that not only promotes illegal activities but also misleads the public.
Guma’s case serves as a stark reminder of the potential consequences of creating sensational content without considering the repercussions. As this case unfolds, it will be interesting to see the legal outcomes and how it impacts the social media landscape in Uganda.
