Work at Mbale Regional Referall Hospital has slowed down after University student medical interns laid down their tools following the managements failure to provide care for their health.
The student interns demand protective equipment such as masks, sanitizers and other items which according to them, are very important during this Coronavirus breakout period.
According to the student interns, the Hospital management has completely ignored their requests to avail necessary medical gear and yet, they attend to patients which exposes them to the risk of Coronavirus infection.
The Vice President Uganda Federation of Medical interns, Dr. Romeo Okidi told Campus Bee that student medical interns are working under very terrible conditions that put their health at risk.
He adds that the students resolved to lay down their tools until the hospital avails the necessary equipment that protect them from contracting any diseases.
“The hospital is ineffectively equipped to manage any outbreak of Coronavirus. We decided to stay at home to ensure the hospital puts in places protection measures of our lives” Dr. Okidi said
According to him, emergency wards like the causality, Outpatient Department and medical emergency ward are not suitable for their work yet they are very crowded, which makes it hard to handle any case of emergency like the COVID-19 case in case one is received.
