University Student Narrates How Equity Bank Fraudulently Cashed Out Her UGX 21 Million

A university student in Kampala has come out to narrate how Equity Bank Uganda fraudulently cashed out UGX 21 million from her bank account. The 24-year-old student has been identified as Edith Nakacwa  who also doubles as a business woman.

While speaking to Daily Monitor, a local newspaper, Nakacwa confessed that she walked to an agent on April 23 to withdraw money from her account. The student explains that she badly wanted to clear a pending payment on a laptop that she needed for both her online studies and business-related activities.

Nakacwa was shocked when she was told that the transaction had been declined due to insufficient balance on her account.  It wasn’t long before she realised that her operating capital with Equity Bank, slightly more than Shs21.9 million was cashed out without her knowledge. Apparently, the bank left her with only Shs59,100.

The restless Nakacwa further discovered that the account was breached multiple times. On the same day, she penned a letter to Equity, notifying the bank of the disappearance of her money.

In a letter dated April 23 addressed to the Equity Church House Branch Manager, Nakacwa noted that her money was removed from her account without her knowledge. The activity was done using Eazzy Money App which she never initiated.

Luckily, Nakacwa on Wednesday revealed that Equity Bank refunded all her money following the zeal of not giving in to blackmail and threats from some bank officials despite the overwhelming evidence showing how her account had been breached.

“I gave them all the time in the world. All I needed was to reimburse my money and a guarantee that this would never happen again,” she told the newspaper on Tuesday this week.

“At this point I felt my patience was being taken for granted. So, I decided to go public with this matter,” Nakacwa added.

Equity Bank has not officially communicated following the incident but Campus Bee has further established that  Bank of Uganda received Nakacwa’s complaint and they directed Equity Bank to commission an independent inquiry.
