Gloria Mwesigye, the bursar of Metropolitan University in Biharwe, Mbarara district, and her husband have been apprehended by authorities in Mbarara following the tragic death of a student. The victim, identified as Kelleti Mbabazi, a first-year student pursuing a Bachelors of Arts in Education at Bishop Stuart University in Mbarara, met a chilling fate after a visit to the couple’s residence.
The series of events began on February 29, 2024, when Mbabazi, accompanied by a friend and coursemate named Jaberi Amwine, departed from the Bishop Stuart University campus in Kakoba to pay a visit to Mwesigye in Biharwe. Sadly, Mbabazi would not be seen alive again, with his lifeless body later discovered in a morgue on March 3, 2024.
Jaberi Amwine recounted the events leading up to the tragedy, stating that they had spent the day with Mwesigye before she suggested they stay the night in Biharwe. However, Mbabazi declined the offer, opting to return to Bishop Stuart University. This decision marked the last known moments of Mbabazi’s life, as subsequent attempts to contact him proved futile until the discovery of his deceased body.
Upon further investigation, authorities uncovered discrepancies in Jaberi’s initial statement. It was revealed that Mbabazi and Jaberi had encountered Mwesigye and her husband, who also serves as a lecturer at Metropolitan University, at the couple’s bar in Biharwe, just a short distance from their residence.
After indulging in a few drinks, the two university students, along with Mwesigye and her husband, proceeded to the couple’s home. Jaberi later left the premises to return to the university, leaving his friend Mbabazi behind at Mwesigye’s residence.
The unsettling discovery of an unidentified body, bearing bruises and deep cuts, near Biharwe on the morning of Saturday, March 1, marked the beginning of a tragic unraveling. Days passed until Mbabazi’s landlord was informed to identify a body that had been languishing in the morgue, ultimately confirmed by Mbabazi’s university acquaintances.
After weeks of painstaking investigation, law enforcement authorities made significant strides in the case this past Sunday. Gloria Mwesigye, her unnamed husband, and three other suspects were arrested on suspicion of involvement in Mbabazi’s murder.
Initial findings suggest a grim scenario—Mbabazi was purportedly slain within the confines of the bursar’s residence following an undisclosed altercation. Subsequently, the perpetrators, along with possible accomplices, disposed of the body mere meters away from the university grounds.
The post-mortem examination results shocked Mbabazi’s family, revealing the extent of his torment. “Mbabazi endured unspeakable, barbaric torture,” expressed a family member anonymously to ChimpReports. “His tormentors drove nails into his feet and arms before ending his life with a severed neck.”
Detectives, confronted with the brutality inflicted upon Mbabazi, are now left to ponder the motive behind this heinous act. “Was this a quest for information, or a punishment for a suspected liaison with Mwesigye?” questioned an informed officer involved in the investigation.
As authorities in Mbarara delve deeper into the case, Mwesigye has purportedly admitted to detectives that Mbabazi met his tragic end within the confines of her home. However, her husband and an unnamed associate, believed to have participated in Mbabazi’s torture, have remained tight-lipped, shrouding their motives in mystery.
The case, registered under CRB 071/2024 at Biharwe, serves as a stark reminder of the darkness that can lurk beneath seemingly ordinary circumstances. As investigations press forward, the community mourns the loss of a promising young student, while grappling with the chilling details of his untimely demise.
