Students across Uganda have, using social media, connected under a team called Students Against Covid_19 to use their voices and fight for the rights of the underprivileged as they help the state fight the global pandemic Corona Virus.
The group, through its team leader, Ms. Naiga Shubrah Kasozi a third year law student at UCU Mukono was encouraged to help others during this trying time to help compliment to the work of the Ministry of Health through creating more awareness and sharing information with those that were most unlikely to receive it.
“We appreciate these directives because they are important for us all. The fact that we cannot occupy spaces in big numbers, we cannot occupy markets in big numbers,” Ms. Kasozi added on her voice.
Before total lock down on the night of 30th March 2020 by the President of Uganda Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, these students had visited one the slums in Kampala to feed street children and also educate them about the Corona Virus disease and how its most likely going to affect them as people.
They also availed these street children with protective gears against the virus which included surgical masks, sanitizers gloves and other equipment.
In a situation of total lockdown that was announced by the president, the group has devised means through a strategic plan on how they will be able to deliver these items collected through donations from Local Council Chairpersons or community leaders and citizens.
They will continue gathering resources that shall be channeled through legitimate and transparent media channels with necessary permission from government to the needy people like street children.
