Tension is running high at Makerere University following the circulation of disturbing screenshots from a WhatsApp group allegedly belonging to students of Mitchell Hall, where members are seen openly calling for violence against suspected gay students.
The chats — now widely shared across social media — reveal a shocking tone of hatred, with some group members advocating for beatings, killings, and even burning those suspected of being gay.
“If we seriously beat these gays to death, fear will grow in them,” one message reads.
Another adds, “Unless we kill someone or burn, they will never know it’s serious.”
In the same group, several participants discuss “clearing” anyone who supports or associates with gay students, accusing them of “betraying” the university’s moral standards.
In one of the messages, a member writes, “Makerere doesn’t tolerate gays. We should come up with our own laws.”
Another responds, “We don’t even want gays in our communities.”
These chilling exchanges appear to reference the recent chaos at Mitchell Hall, where tensions flared after a group of residents accused a fellow student of being gay. The confrontation reportedly led to a violent scene and police intervention.
The Backstory: Chaos at Mitchell Hall
Over the weekend, Makerere’s Mitchell Hall became the center of national attention after students clashed over allegations that a resident was involved in “gay activities.”
According to eyewitnesses, a group of angry students attempted to confront the suspect, forcing campus security and police to intervene.
Later, students from the hall submitted a petition to the university administration, demanding that Makerere “publicly state its position” on homosexuality and accusing police of protecting the alleged student.
The situation escalated when police reportedly fired live bullets in the air to disperse the crowd, triggering panic across campus.
The leaked WhatsApp messages — allegedly from a group named “Young RGB” — have intensified fears of planned attacks on LGBTQ students.
In one message, a member shares a car registration plate, writing, “This is the car of the gays.”
Another warns that unless students take “serious action,” homosexuality will “become normal.”
Screenshots also show discussions about “burning things” to send a warning and “clearing” anyone who sides with gay people.
