The Uganda National Students’ Association (UNSA) has announced the dissolution of its 34th National Executive Committee (NEC) following the expiration of their term on December 31, 2024, setting the stage for highly anticipated student leadership elections later this month.
In a notice issued by UNSA National Speaker Christopher Wasswa, the organization’s leadership will temporarily shift to an interim administration led by the Speaker, Deputy Speaker, and Executive Secretary/Coordinators.
This transition is in accordance with Article 8 (1.3) (a) of the UNSA Constitution, which mandates the automatic expiration of the National Executive Committee at the end of December each year.
The interim leadership has been tasked with organizing an Annual General Meeting within the next 30 days, during which the general elections are expected to take place.
Political observers within the student community are watching closely as potential candidates begin positioning themselves for key leadership positions in what is anticipated to be a highly contested election.
The upcoming elections will determine the composition of the 35th National Executive Committee, with student leaders from various post-primary institutions across Uganda expected to participate in both the voting and candidature.
The exact date for the elections is expected to be announced in the coming days.
While official campaigning has not yet begun, informal discussions about potential candidates are already circulating within student circles.
UNSA serves as the umbrella organization for all students in post-primary institutions throughout Uganda, operating under the Parliamentary Education Act 2008 Part VI, Section 30, which establishes UNSA Students’ Councils in post-primary institutions.
