The President of the Uganda National Students Association (UNSA) Welunga Yusuf has asked students in the country to get back to school following President Yoweri Museveni’s announcement that all schools will reopen on 10th January,2022.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with Campus Bee today at Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU) Main Campus in Mbale City, Welunga says the female students who got pregnant during the prolong lockdown due to COVID-19 must utilize this chance to pursue their academic dreams.
“My fellow students, get back to school. My fellow sisters who have become mothers, don’t lose hope, get back to school. My brothers who have started running some businesses amidst lockdown, get back to school,” Welunga told Campus Bee.
The UNSA President also asked students in the country to always observe Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
“Let’s observe the Standard Operating Procedures to avoid another closure of schools. I am urging students to go and get vaccinated,” he said.
Welunga has asked the Ministry of Health to find ways of distributing COVID-19 vaccines in schools to allow students who failed to get the jab in their villages get it.
The UNSA President who assumed office in November, 2021 has asked the Government to intervene in the rise of the transport fair to allow students travel back to school.
“I also request the Government through the Ministry of Works to look into the issue of transport fare. The transport costs have been so high during lockdown. The Government must intervene to let the transport fare go back to normal to allow students travel for schools.” he says.
Welunga Yusuf has also requested President Museveni to reconsider the time of Boda Bodas to favour the evening students.
“The President said the Boda Bodas must stop operating at 7 pm. Your Excellency Sir, we have some students in evening classes and they rely on Boda Bodas to travel to and from school. I request the President to rethink about the time and extend it so that these evening students can be assisted,” the UNSA President said.
On his foreign trip to Sudan recently, Welunga told Campus Bee that he went their to benchmark on how students leaders in South Sudan handle students affairs and share knowledge.
