The directive by Uganda Communications Commission to TV stations all over the country to air 70% local content has been a blessing in disguise. Initially, some campusers were complaining that their Telemundo and ZeeWorld soaps were cut off, not knowing that it would be the start of something new; something amazing. No doubt, it has led to the rise of content like Campus Freaks: an entirely Ugandan project that premièred Monday 10th July at 9:30pm on Urban TV.
The story of the pleasantly impressive college TV series is based on outstanding personalities among students. The show chronicles habitual problems university students go through like permissiveness, drug abuse, drinking problems and bullying, among others.
Two peer groups; the X gang and the Focus Fairies are in an outlandish contest for superiority. The X gang (led by Alex) add a new member to their group named Thomas, who wants to fit in at all costs. The Focus Fairies’ Bella and Ivy have a mission of becoming stars – in just their first year in university. They will be faced with challenges; from evil folks like Nick aka Dr. Evil who is trying to prove influence and dominance in the Campus environment. This stimulates a series of drama, hatred, love and conflict within and outside campus.
The Epic, directed by Isaac Suubi aka Axess and funded by the young people themselves, has a stunning cast of mostly university students. Most scenes were shot from Nkumba University and its milieu.
According to the Assistant Director, Peter Turyatunga, they are currently in talks with other universities, hoping to bring them on board.
“Viewers should expect the best content.” Turyatunga added.
Don’t forget to catch Campus Freaks every Monday, at 9:30 pm, only on Urban TV.
