At the weekend, the East African University Debate Championships 2018 were launch at Uganda’s second largest public university Kyambogo, which will also be the host of the event come the 1st till the 9th of August 2018.
The event was graced by the minister for East African Affairs, the Rt. Hon Kirunda Kiveijinja, who gave a lengthy and educative interactive speech. While addressing the students from various universities across Uganda who had come to attend the launch, he told them to stop crying to the government to come to their rescue but rather use the knowledge that this government has given them through education to do something for themselves.
The Hon Kiveijinja also cited an example of himself; saying he studied zoology but he hasn’t at any time in his life gotten a chance to practice whatever he studied and at the same time he has never asked for a job.
“I myself studied zoology but I have not gotten a chance to practice it and at the same time I’ve never moved to an office asking for job. I owe it to the vast knowledge that I have,” he stressed.
He encouraged students to venture into gathering as much expertise as they can, while explaining, he cited an example of a student who had previously presented the budget of the event, a student who is pursuing a bachelor’s in human nutrition and not accounting and finance.
The event was attended by many students from Makerere university, Ndejje, Nkumba, Uganda Mayrts Nkozi, UCU, Mubs among others.
Many companies also came through to show their support and also pledged sponsorship of the forthcoming East Africa University Debate Championships 2018, among the companies included the Uganda Debate Society, Inter University Council of East Africa, Nanjing Hotel and many more.
