Victoria University has announced a surprising plan to jet in global music icons Shakira (real name Shakira Isabel Mebarak) and Enrique Iglesias to Uganda.
Shakira is the artiste behind Waka Waka (This Time for Africa), a theme song, that was, for FIFA World Cup 2010. Enrique Iglesias is known for his love ballad, Hero.
The move was hinted on by the university’s vice chancellor, Dr Lawrence Muganga who bragged about the institutions history of organizing successful entertainment events.
In his plea, he called upon Ugandan artistes, who deem themselves fit to battle Shakira and Enrique to come forward and reach out to him.
It should be remembered that last year, the university’s management, spearheaded by Dr Muganga, organized a battle between two top Ugandan artistes – Cindy and her nemesis, Sheebah Karungi.
The battle then sparked social media debates over who is superior and topping the musical game.
Whereas a section of netizens perceived it as a stunt to market Victoria University, Dr Muganga said the battle was aimed to empower the girl-child.
“Sheebah and Cindy are role models when it comes to entertainment. We, therefore, want them to use this opportunity to showcase their talents and inspire young people who see them as their role models,” he said.
Now that the focus has turned to Shakira, we can’t wait to see the music diva on the Ugandan soil! We’ll keep you posted.
