Kyambogo University students from the Faculty of Engineering, particularly at the department of electrical and electronics engineering have broken silence over what they term as psychological torture and unprofessional conduct that they have suffered, from a senior lecturer.
The students accuse a one Abel Kamagara who is a lecturer at the aforementioned department, of being very rude and aggressive to students, which in turn leaves mental anguish to the learners.
In a letter dated 22nd June 2023 addressed to the dean – faculty of engineering at the institution, through the head of department (HOD) – electrical engineering, the students filed a number of concerns which they believe has contaminated the reputation of the department – due to Mr Kamagara’s ‘unruly’ behavior.
“He’s fond of using abusive, demeaning, commanding, authoritative language with frequent jeering at us when communicating to us,” the letter reads in part.
A source at the department, who spoke to Campus Bee on condition of anonymity alleged that the HOD’s office has since declined to sign on the letter which is thereafter, expected to be forwarded to the Dean
Before the students gathered at the office of the Head of Department, the source says that “he disturbed students during exams and they got fed up of him, they approached him for reconciliation but he thought they were attacking him and he ran into the office and students decided to gather outside the office of HOD while he was inside.”
Among other issues that students are facing at the department is the refusal of lecturers to release marks before they are paid their salary arrears from October last year (2022) Campus Bee has learned.
“No student under this department has received his results from last year. We pay fees but the department is reluctant to give us results,” the source revealed.
End of semester exams at the institution are at the climax, with the semester expected to officially close by end of June.
