During St Lawrence University 7th graduation ceremony where 810 graduands were seen off, the Vice President Edward Kiwanuka Ssekandi advised that the only way learned people can succeed in this world is by keeping healthy and disciplined.
Ssekandi, during the Thursday ceremony, said discipline remains paramount in today’s job market, adding:”You must avoid temptations that will lead you to acquire HIV/Aids.”
“You should endeavor to establish job opportunities that will enable you to become employers rather than employees,” Ssekandi added.
NO ACCREDITATION
But as 471 males and 339 females were receiving their diplomas and degrees in various disciplines, a good number of other students were blocked from graduating because the university is not accredited to teach the courses they were doing.
The affected students were those pursuing a degree in computer engineering and those of diploma in journalism. They were excluded from the graduation lists after National Council for Higher Education (NCHE) tried to block the whole graduation ceremony.
Campus Bee has learnt that after some negotiations, the university administrators agreed to exclude graduands on the said programmes since they were indeed not accredited.
The vice chancellor, Prof Frank Mbaaga pledged to settle the issue with the NCHE before organizing a special graduation ceremony for those affected.
However, on a good note, the institution’s founder Prof Lawrence Mukiibi made the first public appearance since the day he got involved in a fatal accident on July 26, 2016.
Mukiibi thanked everyone who contributed to his recovery as he said the accident left him in coma for a several hours.
