Nigerian students from Ugandan universities like International University of East Africa (IUEA), Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU), Cavendish University and King Caesar University last week attended a conference about human trafficking and modern day slavery. The conference organized by Vision Voice Africa Foundation was held at Cavendish University located in Nsambya. While at the conference, the keynote speakers and the students discussed causes of human trafficking and modern day slavery and how to combat it.

Mr Okwunwanne Mmaduka the Founder of Vision Voice for Africa said that many Africans are dying in foreign countries because they are victims of migration. “There has been lots of illegal migration because youths are desperately trying to look for better jobs and so they find all means to go to foreign countries and they end up trafficked, kidnapped and some are killed and their organs are harvested for money” Mr Okwunwanne said. He said that the major concern of Vision Voice Africa is to curb the rising case of people facing deaths in foreign countries and those whose organs are being removed and sold. Mr Okwunwanne said that most of these issues are arising because countries are not providing enough information on human trafficking and the youths are falling prey to it.

Adamu Salihi, a Law student at International University of East Africa said that human trafficking and modern day slavery has been going on for decades and it’s upon us as African students to fight it by involving others and spreading the message about the danger of this vice. “Organizations like Vision Voice of Africa are doing a good thing and embracing the movement to join the fight will make us win this” Adamu said. Most of the youths are indirect and some are direct victims of modern day slavery and it is because of some weak policies of government for example the insecurity in Nigeria is the one making the youths flee their countries for better jobs and security and this is where they end up in trouble.
