The Minister of Health, Dr, Jane Ruth Aceng has come out to comment on government’s decision to get rid of striking medical interns. While speaking to journalists, Aceng revealed that interns are not public servants, adding that they (government) lose nothing when interns continue striking.
The Minister also highlighted on the fact that internship is a training period, not work. According to Aceng, interns stand to lose from the ongoing strike over delayed allowances.
“First of all, we must take note that internship is a training period, it is not work and they are not public servants. They are the ones who stand to lose. We don’t stand to lose anything.” Aceng told journalists.
Aceng noted that interns can choose not to get training, which according to her will delay their registration.
Minister Chris Baryomunsi also revealed that as a person who did internship, interns will lose from the strike because they need internship more than government needs them.
Under their association, Federation For Uganda Medical Interns – FUMI, the aspiring medical experts vowed not to work again until when the delayed allowances reflect on their respective bank accounts. The government gave them one week to leave hospital accommodation facilities in a bid to allow new interns to join.
