Makerere University Business School (MUBS) Principal Prof Wasswa Balunywa has shed a light on the institutions progress towards gender balance in light of this year’s International Women’s Day celebrations.
“In MUBS we have more women in top management positions than men. We have one female professor, we have also graduated about 25 females with PhDs. Parents need to give equal opportunities to both girls and boys in terms of education and inheritance of property,” Prof. Balunywa remarked.
“Women have suffered a lot of historical Injustices in society. In schools, girls don’t do sciences and mathematics. At workplaces, women cannot become CEOs and in banks they can’t access credit. This is a mindset challenge in our society.” Prof. Balunywa added.
Prof Balunywa revealed all this to the attendants of the celebrations at a function organized by MUBS at the main campus to recognize the positive impact of female academicians.
Countrywide, most if not all public universities are headed by males in top positions like Chancellor, Vice chancellor and Deputy vice chancellors, a trend that most gender activists would love to see change. basing on this year’s theme.
The theme for this year’s International Women’s Day is: “Gender equality today for a sustainable tomorrow.”
This year’s campaign is represented by the #BreakTheBias hash tag and calls on people to work towards a world that is equitable, inclusive, and free from bias and discrimination so the playing field is leveled for women moving forward.
