Today, the 20th of April, the First Lady and Minister of Education and Sports, Hon. Janet Kataha Museveni, has issued more guidelines as part of the education response plan in which she encouraged online learning for all students while in quarantine.
The Minister said that the lessons via radio and TV were already in progress and their purpose is to ensure consolidation of basic concepts that have already been learnt. She further said that learners will access pre-recorded lessons and learning materials online.
“Self study materials for primary students have also been developed and will be distributed to learners. The Ministry of Education and Sports (MoES) will hand over the materials to districts through the leadership of the RDCs who will in turn distribute them to the sub county chiefs. The sub county chiefs will then hand them over to the parish chiefs who will then distribute them to the LC1s who will be responsible for handing them over to the learners in their individual homes. This mode of lesson delivery has been made to inclusively cater for students who might not be able to access televisions, radios or the Internet in general.” Mrs Museveni said.
The First Lady further encouraged learners in university and tertiary institutions to engage in wide reading on various subjects including economics, social systems and health inventions in addition to their modules for the semester using every possible means especially the Internet since they already have their course outlines.
She mentioned that the National Council for Higher education will work with universities to ensure continuity of education.
All teachers, instructors and lecturers have been asked to effectively prepare for all the lectures and lessons for the semesters and terms respectively in order to redeem the time that has been lost. The headteachers and heads of institutions were also asked to support their teaching staff with any assistance that they might need in that regard.
“Even after the lockdown has been lifted, education institutions shall need to be prepared for the resumption of education,” noted the Minister of Education and Sports adding that the MOES will work with the Ministry of Health to issue standard operation procedures (SOPs) for education institutions to ensure the safety of learners.
