Wherever there is a smoke, there is always fire. Back in the day, we learnt about several causes of happenings in history and perhaps all this was aimed at training students to be critical in society, find out the ailments and then forge a way out. I have to say the teachers’ efforts didn’t go to waste, at least those who taught Mulaala Alex a student from Gulu University who has critically analyzed and perhaps put up a hypothesis to what could be one of the barriers to the development of Gulu University.
“I have realized that watsapp is the number one barrier to the development of Gulu University,” he said, responding to a picture of a memo dated 15th January 2018 from the Vice Chancellor circulated onto WhatsApp by the Dean of students and then shared everywhere by students. The memo referred to the suspension of semester one examinations for the academic year 2017/2018.
“Other institutions use newspapers and press conferences but Gulu,” continued Alex. He said this trying to portray that Gulu University needs intervention by stake holders past Karuma. “We demand a well written response from the guild including petitions to the President and Speaker of Uganda plus other respective offices tomorrow,” said Ayebazibwe Ambrose, a pragmatic student who often times expresses himself in literature. We have seen him earlier push issues to stake holders when the University and guild failed. Recently, he took the honors of writing to the Uganda Revenue Authority inquiring why students should have Tax Identification numbers yet their allowances are free of taxes. This had been a barrier to students getting their allowances as it had been alleged.
The bottom line of all this is that the students in Gulu feel oppressed and perhaps government needs to know this as well as the stake holders. The fact that examinations are not any time soon is a big blow to many who have other responsibilities past school.
