Makerere university’s 87th guild speaker Gatuya Muchyo (NRM) says that for a guild president to win an election in Makerere, they must disguise as members of the opposition and later return to their mother party NRM.
Muchyo, while mentoring freshers during the NRM Mak chapter first year’s orientation held on Friday March 11th 2022 at the Central Teaching Facility auditorium (CTF 2), said that in order to win any election in Makerere, one has to camouflage as member of the opposition to win hearts of students and later return to NRM.
Besides, Makerere’s 87th guild speaker wondered why ‘draconian’ policies have always been passed and yet it has been the opposition in the lead citing the 84th guild President Papa Were Salim of the FDC in whose reign the controversial 15% tuition policy came to pass.
“To win in Makerere, you must disguise as opposition,” Gatuya said. “Draconian policies have been past when it’s the opposition in charge,” he added.
Muchyo said that NRM fails each year whenever they fail to get an NRM guild president; bragging that now that NRM managed to get a guild speaker (himself), that’s no longer in the interest of the party but the guild presidential seat now is.
Hon Wilson Kabwengye, Member of parliament for Nyabushozi, who was the guest speaker at the orientation advised students to prioritize education and spend their time at campus in establishing healthy connections that will help them in the end after graduation.
“No amount of pleasure or passion should divert you from what brought you. Concentrate on what brought you here,” Hon. Kabwengye advised.
Makerere university’s top students’ seat (Guild president) has in the past years been dominated by opposition parties with currently NUP taking the lead.
Had it not been for NUP, Shamim Nambassa’s victory story as Makerere’s 87th guild president could have probably taken a different twist.
