German Amanya, the guild president of Kyambogo University has criticised the students that recommended up to 75% tuition increment at Makerere University in a period of five years saying they are uninformed, unreasonable and out of touch with realities facing university students.
“It’s good to be informed when it comes to national matters. There is no way you can deliberate public university issues when you’re ignorant about national issues,” a tough-talking Amanya told our reporter.
“We serve universities which have personal, internal and external political influence and interests. Be so vigilant and see that no positive change will come even if they hike tuition” he added.
Amanya said that as leaders, they should not afford to see many of their fellow students dropping out of campus because of unfair decisions made by their purported student leaders. While mocking the tuition comparisons between Makerere and the University of Nairobi, he said it is stupid to compare Kenya’s economy with Uganda’s because the GDP is exclusively different.
“We pay in accordance to the stability and state of the economy. So 75% increment would be a big blow to students. Some students at times fail to sit for exams because they completely fail to get just UGX 200,000 of tuition balance” he noted.
He said that a true leader is one who feels the pain of the people he leads.
“How do you waste your time electing a guild leadership that rushes to recommend tuition increment just because they have compared fees structures but forgot to compare the stability of the economy?” Amanya asked.
