Prof. Wasswa Balunya, the Makerere University Business School (MUBS) Principal has today released a statement blasting the MUBS Academic Staff Association members that addressed the media on Sunday regarding Salary disparities at the Nakawa-based campus.

The lecturers declared a sit-down strike citing failure by the government to resolve the ten-year-long dispute over salary disparities. They threatened not to teach when the university reopens on 15th October for final year students.

According to Balunywa, the information circulated by the bitter lecturers is false and regrettable. Balunywa explained that the process of enhancing lecturers’ salaries was never complete due to the COVID-19-related constraints.

“In 2015 Government decided to enhance salaries of employees in all public universities. Due to various constraints, this process has never been completed. At that time there were students who were in MUBS on staff Development fellowships as Graduate Assistant and were not enhanced because they were not staff then. When they completed their studies, we requested that Government enhances them but unfortunately due to budget constraints, this has not been finalized Yet.” Balunywa’s statement reads.

“The action by the Staff Academic Association is regrettable and very unfortunate because Government has taken all the necessary initiatives to address this matter. It is also unfortunate that as Government attempts to solve the problem that arose from the Coronavirus pandemic involving students in Universities, a small number of staff think if fit not to teach.” The statement adds.

Balunywa further assured students that the matter will be referred to the School Council who will take the necessary action. According to Balunywa, the matter will be resolved in an amicable manner and it will not affect final students who are expected to resume studies on 15th October.
