Youth Connect Uganda (YCU), a university students initiative, has organised a three-day leadership camp that is among other things meant to tackle unemployment among the youth.
Started in 2014 by 3 university students, YCU is dedicated to the empowerment of youth in Uganda by advocating for their participation in the Social, political and economic spheres of their country.
It has elevated its programs to instill leadership characteristics through an event dubbed #DecemberYouthCamp 2016 in its 1st edition to be held at Botanical Gardens Entebbe starting from December 17 to19 with each participant paying Shs 60,000 per.
When asked why a leadership camp, Youth Connect Uganda had this to say;
“The camp will give a unique environment outside the home, conference room and classroom. The camp will bridge social, racial, physical and economic inequalities for both the youth participants and the youth leaders.”
YCU has also partnered with several other organizations including NBS TV (MixUp youth show), Infoholics, CampusBee, Evolution Media Group, DietPlus, PHAHU, Oasis photo studio and many others. With these several organizations, the camp will create leaders of consequence for the chaotic, fickle and ephemeral environment full of unemployment.
“You realise that most of the youth lack leadership skills that’s why they’ve failed to startup meaningful projects to suppress desperate need for jobs that are not in existence. This camp will give them a platform to hear from those [organizations] doing something selflessly and are impacting. This will also give them an insight on how to go about employment in the current times,” said the YCU programs Director Wabwire W’a Waheirire, a law student.
The activities in the camp will not be limited to the following:
*Team building sessions and networking
* Meditation on the Millennium Development Goals (M.D.Gs) and S.D.Gs
*Outdoor master-classes on Photography and videography.
* Entrepreneurship skills development
