Zahara Abdul a fresh graduate from Makerere University and Uganda Christian University (UCU)’s Andrew Kartende have been declared the winners of the German online photo contest “Confidence in the Future”.
A total of over 200 photographers on the continent presented their photos before 30th April for the first photography contest of Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung where only four winners were selected by a jury to take the biggest prizes. Ugandans took the first two positions, photographers from Germany and Uruguay took the third and forth places.
Zahara Abdul, the overall winner paints her history as that which grow greater from the experience she gained working with the biggest online campus news website, Campus Bee and Kampala Express.
In the photo that she presented for competition “Seeking Light”, according to the statement of the jury “is a plea for creative power of the future through education”. She will be taking away the grand prize of 1,500 Euros.
Kartende, a third year student of the Bachelors of Procurement and Logistics at UCU Kampala campus was the second winner. The photo he presented “Hope in the future” won a prize of 1,000 Euros. His “…highlights the situation on ecology and poverty in parts of Africa” said the jury statement on their website.
“I am really glad to have emerged as one of the winners of this competition, much thanks Konrad Adenauer” he says. He also adds that through the photo he submitted, he attempted to “permeate through generality and bring to light the complexity teenagers go through confidentially hoping for a brighter tomorrow.” This he said is reflected by the fact the youth are always hustling for a better future, and this is what he meant to depict.
