Mbarara University of science and Technology last week issued out dismissal letters to 48 students.
This was decided in the 85th Senate seating confirming that the students were found in possession of mobile phones within the examination hall.
In the letters given to all the 48 students, the university Vice Chancellor confirmed and sided with the senate confirming the dismissal of the students.
He said in the letter that a candidate shall be advised to discontinue his/her studies at the University if she/he engages in examination malpractice.
“I therefore discontinue you from Mbarara University of science and Technology (MUST),” the Vice chancellor announced.
It’s at this point that the students were told to handover all the university property which might be in their possession including the student’s ID to the relevant authorities before they leave.
According to the University rules and regulations, the students have the right to the Student’s Welfare and Disciplinary Committee of Council.
Many of these students still want to stay in the institution and have been seen appealing the senate’s decision.
Most of the discontinued students were from the faculty of applied sciences.
According to a trusted source, one student who was in his 3rd year has already joined as a first year student at Makerere University and he’s doing a different course from what he had been offering at MUST.
The university examination rules and regulation state that if a student is caught cheating in an exam, he/she shall be subjected to either of the 3 following punishments:
- A warning letter
- Giving him/her a dead year
- Discontinuation from the University
According to most of the students’ opinions, the university had to follow the order as it is in the regulations in consideration to the online study that was used last semester.
