The education student who last week stormed her class dinner in a swim suit attire is the trending campus talk. Most lecturers have commented negatively condemning her dress code, the police has served her with arrest summons and the Dean of Students has also joined the jury league summoning her to appear before the disciplinary committee.
But what is this University Students disciplinary committee? And who chairs it? And where have they been all along? It turns out that the disciplinary committee is waking up to do its functionality case study on Rebecca Naddamba because her photos were leaked by shocked fellow teachers. Has this committee reviewed pictures from other dinners from previous years and current ones to see how boobs and bums are left handing and thighs exposed beyond super market display style? How about the conduct on other functions where students represent the University. The fact that the University did not set any minimum dressing standard literally opens up adulthood common sense mechanisms that any student can put on anything they feel like so long as they are comfortable with it. We walk on Kikoni streets in boxers and no one cares because we feel its okay.
The committee points out a bleach of University Regulation section 8(2)(a) which states that “every student shall respect him/herself and behave in a manner that will not bring his/her name and that of the University into disrepute”. Just like the other laxity Ugandan laws that are feasible to exploitation because of their indefinable boundaries and unclear contents.
Breaking down this particular section, Rebecca as a slay queen didn’t find it shameful to step out of her room dressed like she was so!. We better stop acting like we want to protect her privacy more than her own self. Its her name anyway and a personal decision, we should let her deal with her consequences herself.
And where does this committee hide whenever Mitchel and Lumumba hall residents are exchanging blows and causing chaos on most university functions huh? Students take booze and turn chaotic during guild rallies but all this goes unquestioned and unpunished. Maybe the Disciplinary committee has been on vacation or it also needs millions to look into such indiscipline vices with a rather sharp and keen eye. A line should aslo be drawn between disciplinary commitees and police work. I cant recall any moment when FR. Lokodo sent an arrest warrant to Artiste Desire Luzinda when her sex clips leaked on the web surface.
I know the committee is cooking up an Anita Fabiola like punishment. Please lets not forget to calculate the different degrees of nudity involved here.
