As elections draw nearer, outgoing Guild Representative Councillor of the School of Social Sciences Makerere University, Salim Katumba is among those that have come out to show interest in running Kawempe.
While Speaking to CampusBee on Friday, Makerere’s 2014/15 Best leader of the year says that the poor living conditions of the people of Kawempe have inspired him to come out come and contest for leadership.
He says that he came to learn about the conditions while educating the Youth in different parishes of Kawempe.
“I discovered that Kawempe is the biggest slum among the the Five divisions of Kampala City. As a youth and a fresh leader from University this is the best way in which I can cause an impact to the people of Kawempe,” he says.
He further adds that the impact would be felt when he is in leadership and the best position he feels he can serve best is the Youth Councillorship of Kawempe Division.
“Am aspiring on the FDC ticket, am also the Current FDC Youth Chairperson of Kawempe Division.” The position is currently held by Walusimbi Shakur.
On the current NRM fights, Katumba says that as a Political Scientist and a strong Democrat, “I can’t fail to have a comment about the the current fights between Museveni and Amaama Mbabazi.”
“I really wonder why NRM doesn’t allow internal party democracy to prevail as it does in other political parties like FDC. To me, it’s not a crime if Hon Amama Mbabazi comes up and declares that he is going to aspire against Museveni.”
Katumba thinks this is healthy and it shows Internal Party Democracy and maturity for any political party.
“And another question would be; why is the aspiring on different positions in NRM selective? As other positions are aspired for by different NRM party members, the position of Chairperson and NRM party Flag bearer is left for only one man (Museveni) and those that come up to aspire against him are really looked at as people defying party
rules.”
