A university football game between arch rivals, Makerere University and Kyambogo University that was supposed to be played today at the Kyambogo football grounds never went as planned. Violence started before even the players stepped on the pitch.

It all started after the MUK van carrying the players and supporters landed on the Kyambogo soils. The Kyambogo students took to the pitch wielding sticks and stones. They started pelting stones at the Makerere players and supporters before they could even warm up for the game.

The officials could not start the match as violence escalated. They were instead forced to call police that dispersed students with teargas as Kyambogo students treated their MUK counterparts with a dose of kiboko (canes) and stones. One official fell victim when she was injured by a Kyambogo student who mistook her for a MUK student.

An official statement by the University Football League is yet to be issued.
