It was around this time many years ago, actually in 1962 that Uganda was granted her independence from the colonial masters. 9th October, we now feast and celebrate.
Kiruhura Inter-University Students Associations (KISA) from a number of universities in Uganda to include Makerere, MUBS, UCU, Kyambogo, KIU and Nkumba organized an inter university soccer tournament that took place on the UCU main pitch to crown the Independence Day celebrations in their own style.
While the entire nation glued herself on screen for the National celebrations in Kiyunga, Luuka District, some university students were blowing vuvuzelas in UCU to moral boost their respective teams on the pitch. The Makerere supporters dominated the evening as the infamous red gowns were visible everywhere around the pitch with chants of “Nyakayima” in very loud tones.
The Kiruhura students, as they generally called themselves had their own special treat.
A total of 6 teams played, with the hosts producing UCU 1 and UCU 2 (representing Nkumba that did not make it for the games). Kyambogo and MUBS lost at the first stage.
Four teams qualified for the semi-final. UCU 1 versed UCU 2, with the latter emerging victor 2 goals to none. KIU beat Makerere 2-1 with the winning goal coming from a penalty kick.
The final was between UCU 1 and KIU that ended with the UCU team losing to KIU 2 nil.
In the same vein, the Kiruhura students were soliciting for a number of signatures for a petition to the government. The students are petitioning the parliament, the president and the minister for animal husbandry to help them fight the ticks’ infestation that is attacking many animals from a number of districts in the western region.
“Ticks are attacking our cattle and we want the government to help us” Twinamatsiko spoke vigorously with a lot of optimism that they would raise the signatures. “We want to raise as many signatures as we can”.
Twinamatsiko Jordan is the Deputy Prime Minister of the MAK guild government and together with Mandera Nkunda-a former guild president aspirant are spearheading the campaign for the signatures.
The day ended at around 7pm with an award of a trophy to KIU the winning team.
